About the Murray Automotive Group

Murray's looks back on over 80 years of change and growth in a vital and fascinating business.
In the spring of 1926 Andrew A. Murray established a car business in Souris, Manitoba. This business initially sold "Star" cars, and eventually was selling Essex and Hudson cars. Later, in 1934 Murray's Garage began to handle General Motors cars and trucks which has continued since that time.
In 1946 two of Andy Murray's sons, Ewart and Clair, joined the firm. A third son, Del, joined his father in "Murray's Farm Equipment" while Ewart and Clair remained with "Murray's Garage". By 1957, they employed 24 people.
In 1960 Clair purchased Brandon Automobiles Ltd. This was the Pontiac-Buick dealer in Brandon. Eleven years later, in 1971 Clair's brother Ewart purchased Brandon Automobiles (1959) Ltd. He operated the dealership until his death in 1981.
Clair established Murray Chev-Olds-Cadillac Ltd. in May, 1971. This dealership operated out of rented facilities at 1906 Park Avenue. In September 1974, a new facility was built on six acres at 1500 Richmond Avenue to house the rapidly-expanding business.
Three generations of Murray's
Doug Murray (Clair's eldest son), joined the firm of Murray Chev-Olds-Cadillac in August 1979. He is the first of three generations of Murray's to make a career in the automotive industry. Clair's other three sons have since joined the automotive business. Paul, Danny and Chris are all running dealerships outside of Brandon after getting their training at the "home dealership" in Brandon.
Also affiliated with the four Murray dealerships are 18 additional dealerships. Many of these are owned and managed by people who worked their way up with the Murrays. Namely: Craig Dunn in Portage La Prairie, Dean Cooley in Dauphin, Charles Van Den Broek in Moose Jaw, Clark Lang in Fort St. John, Ian Gray in The Pas, Brian Carlson in Estevan, Rob Taylor in Abbotsford, Scott Robertson in Merritt and Lyall Cook in Nipawin.
Clair Murray, the leader of the Murray Auto Group was a finalist in the Entrepreneur of the Year program (July 2003) sponsored by National Post, Ernst & Young, Global, RDI and La Presse. Clair has been the leader of the Murray Auto Group for over 60 years now. He is well respected by his partners, employees and customers.
